When high water and flooding conditions occur, many fly fishing persons are prone to cancel their trips and lay down the rods till the waters come back to normal levels, this is a good choice for safety minded people and those who do not want to wade high water conditions.
As a guide obviously making a living from trout fishing, I must be able to conduct my business in most conditions presented.
When the waters become high and unfishable, I target the tributaries of large river systems and river systems that have a small drainage area per square mile and a gentle gradient.
The "tribs" tend to drain quickly offering good angling opportunities while the main river roars with vast amounts of water.
A small drainage area and gentle gradient often results with slowly rising waters and good clarity, even with a volume of water, this type of drainage is still fishable.
