WHAT IS FFTA'S "LEARN TO FLY FISH PROGRAM??

As an instructor and guide with years watching fly fishing from an educating point of view, the one most important aspect of this sport that stands strong and is the backbone of an experienced fly fishing person are the physical skills needed on the water to "make a fly look alive" which are broken into 3 categories:

Basic casting skills
Line management
Proper presentation of flies to entice fish to strike.

These skills are the most important and the basic foundation to becoming an experienced fly fishing angler.

Fly fishing is a sport with many different skills and knowledge bases that are rolled into one required to become a confident angler on the water.
Some of the following are aquatic insect identification and corresponding flies,
knowledge of waters and seasons, your equipment, etc.,
these are just some of the skills needed for successful fly fishing. You can build these skills as much as possible
through books and online information,
but without the knowledge of physical skills required, you can not back up the fore-mention skills....
books and online information can go only so far.
FFTA will take you out on a stream or river and teach you the basic physical skills needed to land fish.
You will learn to fly fish in a "real fly fishing situation and build the proper physical skills
needed to return to water on your own with confidence.

FIONA AND BILL WITH 14" BROWN

Testimonials:

Great trip!!!

From the get-go Rich was phenomenal.
He was very informative about everything from the ecology to the equipment.
He knows the area well enough to find a great spot close
to where we were vacationing (which was a remote area).
Rich was very patient with a good eye for the mistakes
that a spin-fisherman makes when he learns to fly fish.
The entire day was spent on the river actually
fly fishing rather than in a classroom.
He not only taught us how to cast, but also to read the
flow of the river and learn how to find where the fish will be.
Rich doesn't have trade secrets--he'll teach you as much as you want to know.
The day was never boring especially by capping it off with our experience
of "the one that got away": a 20" brown trout that snapped the tippet!
Looking forward to hitting the river with Rich again in the future!

Wumble

Barb & I wanted to drop you a note for inclusion in your testimonials.
But we still had FUN and caught plenty of fish! Thanks again for putting us on the fish!

Three years ago, my wife and I visited friends in Wyoming. During the trip, I was reintroduced to fly fishing.
Something I had tried a few times and really enjoyed back in the late 60’s.
Returning back to Upstate New York, I made up my mind that I wanted to give it another go
and started looking for someone to teach me how to properly fly fish.
Looking for help, I stumbled across Rich’s website and booked a teaching trip
for both myself and my wife the summer of 2012. During that basic training of fly fishing we were both
impressed with Rich’s ability to break fly fishing down to simple thoughts and actions.
That first trip I even learned how to WUMBLE. For those that have fished with Rich you know what
I mean. He has the patience to work with the beginner and also someone just trying to step up their
game and get better. His knowledge of fly fishing techniques and of the local rivers is
outstanding and he works very hard to put you on fish.
I would highly recommend Rich Garfield to anyone!----Jim Sanford

I also starting fly fishing three years ago and learned in a hurry
that fly fishing is definitely not as easy as it looks.
With the intuitive teaching techniques and expertise of Rich Garfield, I am
learning to catch fish and enjoying my time on the various rivers.
Learning from Rich is NOT just about fishing.............
he is a treasure of information and a compassionate advocate of all nature,
it’s habits and habitats. It is not just the quantity of fish caught (he might argue this),
BUT the quality of time spent and with Rich you are getting top quality in both respects.
Thank you Rich for opening my eyes to a whole new world----Barb Sanford
